Automobile Information

Driver's License

  • New residents must buy a Louisiana driver's license after establishing a residency in the state, excluding military personnel.
  • Holders of valid out-of-state licenses are not required to take the driving test, However, they must take the visual and other tests.
  • If moving from out-of-state, bring your out-of-state driver's license, Social Security card and two documents showing proof of residence.
  • Student applicants must be 15 years old or older, have certified state birth certificate, Social Security card, status enrollment form from their school and one parent signature.
  • The fee for the four-year driver's license is $18 cash.
  • A Louisiana driver's license may be purchased at the following

Vehicle Registration

  • Vehicles should be registered after 30 days of residency and after you have secured your Louisiana driver's license.
  • The cost of a vehicle registration varies with the fair market value of the vehicle. The fee may be paid by check. Call the Office of Motor Vehicles for exact fee.
  • Bring your current title (with the lienholder's address if there is a lein on the vehicle), your current registration and proof of liability insurance.
  • After the vehicle is registered, it must be inspected annually at service stations and garages displaying the large orange sign stating "Official Louisiana Vehicle Inspection Station."
